Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent pro-Palestinian activist and former Columbia University graduate student, filed a lawsuit against the university on September 14.
The lawsuit accuses Columbia of failing to protect pro-Palestinian activists from harassment, threats and doxxing. It also alleges that the university treated peaceful pro-Palestinian demonstrations as security concerns and took disciplinary action against students involved in criticism of Israel.
Khalil became nationally known after his arrest by US immigration authorities in March 2025 during the Trump administration’s crackdown on pro-Palestinian campus protests. He spent 104 days in immigration detention before being released on bail.
His latest lawsuit has brought his case back into the national conversation and reopened questions about free speech, university policies and the treatment of pro-Palestinian activists in the United States.
