Russian Drone Hits Train Near Poland

The Russia-Ukraine war moved uncomfortably close to NATO territory on Sunday after a Russian drone struck a passenger train near Ukraine’s border with Poland.

The train was hit near the Yahodyn border crossing, only a short distance from Polish territory. No casualties were reported, but the location of the strike immediately drew attention in Europe.

What made the incident even more sensitive was the timing. A diplomatic train carrying several high-profile European figures had passed through the area shortly before the attack. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and European security officials were among those travelling in the area. Another train carrying former CIA director David Petraeus was also nearby but was not hit.

Ukrainian railway authorities suggested that the diplomatic train may have been the intended target, although there has been no independent confirmation that Russia specifically targeted those officials.

A Second Strike Near the Polish Border

The train incident was not the only strike that raised concern.

A Russian attack also hit a truck close to the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing between Ukraine and Poland. The strike temporarily disrupted the border crossing, which is an important route for goods and military supplies moving between Ukraine and its European allies.

That is the part European officials are watching particularly closely.

The war has repeatedly spilled into areas close to NATO borders, but attacks affecting transport routes immediately next to Poland carry a different level of sensitivity. So far, the latest strikes have remained on the Ukrainian side of the border.

For NATO countries, the concern is not simply about where one drone lands. It is about how frequently Russian attacks are reaching areas close to allied territory.

The closer those strikes come to Poland, the greater the risk of an accident, miscalculation or direct violation of NATO territory.

On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump called on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop targeting Russian diesel infrastructure, arguing that the attacks were contributing to a global fuel shortage and higher diesel prices.

Russia, meanwhile, has continued large-scale drone and missile attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
