Can Europe Fight Russia Alone?
European NATO members are now increasing defence spending and investing heavily in ammunition, drones, air defence systems, military vehicles and other battlefield capabilities. Germany is at the centre of this push, with Berlin planning a major expansion of its armed forces and defence budget.
The objective is not simply to increase military spending but to build the industrial capacity needed for a prolonged conflict. European governments are pushing defence companies to produce weapons and ammunition faster while also strengthening military logistics and troop readiness.

NATO countries on Europe’s eastern flank are increasing surveillance and military preparedness. Poland and the Baltic states remain particularly focused on the possibility of Russian military pressure or hybrid attacks.

Europe has depended heavily on American intelligence, air power, long-range weapons, logistics and other military capabilities for decades. If Washington decided to reduce its involvement in a future European conflict, European countries would have to carry a much larger share of the burden.
For now, there is no indication that a direct NATO-Russia war is inevitable. But Europe’s rapid rearmament shows that its governments are preparing for a future in which they may need to defend the continent with greater military independence.
The coming years could therefore determine whether Europe can truly become a stronger military power—or whether it will continue to rely on the United States as the ultimate security guarantor.
